Since I have a cat with this problem, I'm looking for info also.So far I've turned up:
an excellent article from the Cornell Feline Health Center, Cornell University, College of Veterinary Medicine,Ithaca, New York
http://web.vet.cornell.edu/public/fhc/urinary.htm
From the Internet Vet a recipe for making your own food.
Shlomit Schuster asks:
One of my many male cats has FUS. He is on a Ph-control diet and has to stay on it. Next to the diet food out of a tin, my vet says that I can feed him rice and potatos. What else is good for him in this condition. Can I make something that would replace the can food?
Hill's has a homemade diet for this purpose. The ingredients are as follows:
FELINE RESTRICTED MINERAL AND SODIUM DIET
1lb regular ground beef cooked 1/4lb liver (beef, chicken or pork only) cooked 1 cup cooked white rice cooked without salt 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil 1 teaspoon (5g) of Calcium Carbonate (from healthfood stores) 1/8 teaspoon KCL (salt substitute)
Makes approx. 1 3/4 lbs.
Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the feline MDR for all vitamins and trace minerals, and 250mg taurine/day. (Clam juice is a good source of taurine.)
Feed 1/4lb per 7-8lbs of body weight daily.
Hope this is helpful for you.
