Don't get me wrong. There's *lots* of great information here. What gets me is all of the really bad examples owners are giving on disciplining their cats. The most recent one is from the lady with a cat peeing on the couch and personal belongings. My roomate had a cat that would take the first chance it could to pee on my laundry. If I left the door to my room open just for a second, she'd be in there peeing on my stuff. Did I hit the cat? No. Actually, I just was very careful to keep the door to the room closed. Not to mention, I hated that damn cat (which is probably why she peed on my stuff). I had good reasons for disliking this cat (but that's another story). I never once raised my hand at that animal, but I did have to raise my voice on occaision (ie. tearing up the plants and the couch and the carpet and the walls and knocking things off the counter and... you get the point.
Anyway, the recent post about kitty peeing on personal belongings was horrible. Locking a cat away in a room for hours on end solves nothing, people. Too many people think cats think they are little humans. WRONG. Cats thing WE are huge cats. Think about it. If it was a little human, it would understand English. I know how animals can be very personified and how we see human-like qualities in them. The point I'm getting at is that cats do NOT have the intelligence of a human. Hell, even locking teenagers up in their rooms accomplishes nothing. What makes you people think a cat is better than them at figuring this out?
Arrrrgh! Please disregard this post if it offends you. If it offends you, you are probably offended b/c you know how to discipline a cat and you know that cats that are spayed usually don't spray and mark territory and that rubbing a cats OR a dog's nose in feces accomplishes nothing other than the animal thinking, 'Gee... I was sitting on the floor, minding my own business, when for no reason the human picked me up, put my nose in crap, and beat the hell out of me. hmm... They also did this when I came up to see them when they came home, and when I had just finished eating. What do they want me to quit doing so that I don't have to have my nose rubbed in crap?'
Scenario II: 'Whoh! Everytime I take a dump on the rug I get slapped and yelled at. Maybe I won't dump on the rug anymore...'
Those of you with < 1 dozen brain cells have been flamed.
