Our 6-yr old Himalayan, Honeycat, has suddenly developed a very strange and disturbing habit. She'll be laying down quietly, when she will suddenly jump up, swivel around to look at her tail, possibly turn to bite it, then start running through our apartment like something is chasing her! She'll run from the front to the back of the apartment, then flop on the floor, panting, with her eyes wild and her ears laid back.
At first, I thought she had picked up fleas from the screened porch, so I gave her a couple of baths. Didn't help. She's been doing this for about 6 days now; her behavior is getting increasingly strange. Over the past couple of days, she's taken to hiding in the closet, under his shirts (which almost touch the ground), where she can't be seen. Her appetite is off, and she's not nearly as affectionate as she used to be. She seems scared more often than not.
She's been fixed since before I got her 4 and 1/2 years ago, so I don't think that has anything to do with it. If it wasn't such a crazy idea, I'd swear she's seeing ghosts! She actually looks at her tail like something is pulling at it.
Any ideas out there???? I just don't know what to do for her anymore.
