I live in a rural area where people often dump unwanted animals. There is a large, dark gray longhaired cat [haven't gotten close enough for a better description] that seems to have teamed up with a medium-sized black dog to plunder neighborhood trash cans.

I'm pretty certain the cat showed up in the neighborhood first, but it's possible they were dumped together. At any rate, the cat climbs into garbage cans, and fishes out a bag, then the dog comes up and tears the bag open.

I only see them together at night. I see the dog frequently alone during the day, and I've seen the cat alone at dusk. If they're scared off, they run away together.

Has anyone heard of stray cats working with a stray dog this way? I want to call the county animal-control officer about it, but I know he'll only catch the dog [he's told me as much in the past] and I wonder what will become of the cat alone.
